Patty Mills: Persistence = Success

Chances are you are probably not an NBA nut like me. If you are, then you would definitely know what I’m talking about when I mention the name Patty Mills.

This guy has gone from a bench player for the San Antonio Spurs who was lucky to get junk minutes (game time only when your team is up or down by a LOT and the game is either won or lost by a long shot) to a key role player getting plenty of back up minutes as a key bench player coming on to replace the future Hall of Famer and Spurs star Tony Parker.

And this change in the space of only 12 months is not because of luck or injuries to anyone else on the roster. It has come down to two things.

Persistence.

Bloody hard work.

The Spurs Coach – Gregg Popovich has been quoted as saying that Patty was a fat ass and as a result didn’t get the minutes that he’d probably thought he warranted.

So, rather than kick the can and demand a trade or be content with copping $1.13 mill (US) and getting minimal game time he got hungry.

And worked his arse off during the off season.

He stripped approx 7% body fat and put in the typical Aussie work ethic.

And this season it paid off.

From #3 point guard to back up getting quality minutes and being used in big situations – to showing up the games best player, Lebron James, a number of times during the just completed NBA finals. He made it happen.

And yesterday, along with fellow Aussie Aron Baynes, Patty became an NBA champion. Winning his first NBA ring and a new bunch of fans in the process.

I’ve been a fan of his for a number of years and couldn’t be more happy for him and what he has earned. Yesterday was his crowning glory = scoring 17 points including 14 in the 3rd quarter where he just couldn’t miss.

Sure, I was cheering for the Miami  yesterday as a HEAT fan, but I have a soft spot for Patty and the Spurs even before this season and nobody can begrudge his impact this year.

The commentators raved about him all series, Coach Pop absolutely loves him and so do his teammates. He just seems like the type of guy who you’d love to sit down and have a beer with.

Well done Patty. You’ve shown what a kid from Australia can do with hard work and never giving up.

You deserve a fat pay rise with free agency this year and the extra credit that comes with it.
