Sliding Doors

Have you ever seen that Gwyneth Paltrow movie Sliding Doors?

It’s a pretty cool concept don’t you think?

Playing out two scenarios of what could’ve been if you had’ve left home on time or were running late (or however the story went).

I also think it has a huuuuge element of reality.

My ‘sliding doors’ moment was 27 May 2005.

10 years ago yesterday.

The day I stopped being pretty much a selfish prick only worried about my game and that was it.

The day when I realised I had 2 choices.

?1) say screw the world and carry a chip on my shoulder

2) use it as the kick up the arse I needed to pull my finger out and realise what I wanted – and didn’t want – from life – and that what I was doing wasn’t exactly satisfying me

As you may be aware, that was the day my Dad died from that heart attack at 53.

And it proved to be a turning point.

I chose sliding door number 2.

That’s why I’m here now.

Who knows what would’ve happened or where I’d be if he had’ve been giving a ‘wake up call’ like we were all hoping it was.

You know the one where he’d realise that he needed to change and that was the line in the sand.

Change your habits.

Loose weight.

Stop putting it off.

Kinda funny the bargaining that you can do with whatever higher power you may or may not believe in when it all goes to shit isn’t it?

Anyways, the point of this, apart from some sort of therapy of sorts I guess, is to realise that at one point or another in your life you will have your ‘sliding doors moment’.

It may have already happened or it may be around the corner.

Doesn’t mean that it always means death and disaster.

Just means that there’s two roads to take.

It isn’t easy to work out which one.

Trust me, I didn’t just decide the day he died that this was the path I was going to take.

I was pissed.

At him for letting it happen I guess and the universe for letting it happen.

But you get that.

It changed the way I view things.

And can maybe make me sound like a heartless bastard sometimes.

But you get that.

My uncle Paul had it spot on yesterday when he said “They say times heals – I think not”.

Thanks for listening.
